A Bi Among Ye is BACK at it again!
(.. get it? Cause I’m the Bi Among Ye! no? Tough crowd? :P)
From Top Cow, an Image Comics Imprint, and by writer Stephanie Philips, Artist Josh George, Colorist John Kalisz, and Letterer Troy Peteri, A Man Among Ye #7 is in shops this Wednesday, 10/27! From the first page, this issue immediately drops us into chaos- and it’s fantastic!
One of my favorite things about A Man Among Ye is that the women in this series are just as brutal as the men. They don’t fight by flipping and spinning around their heads (I love you Natasha Romanoff); they spill blood, they gut men, they slit throats, and quite frankly, one is lucky if they get to keep their eye after a physical encounter with one of these women. They are unapologetic and I absolutely love it!
George’s art continues to blow me away- I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: somehow, he’s perfected how to draw women as strong, independent, sexy, and all these other amazing adjectives, without oversexualizing them. Drawing women is not only where he shines though; because this issue is so action-packed and relies so heavily on the art telling the story, I think this is one of the best issues for George! Who needs to watch Pirates of the Caribbean when I can read a far more inclusive, far more action-packed, far sexier version of it?? This book would not be the same without George’s art!
I adore the color palette that Kalisz uses- it’s a perfect balance between muted colors, particularly in the nighttime, and brighter gradients to emphasize certain characters. For example, bright red is the color of Anne, a luminant forest green is the color of Jane; each woman is defined by her own color, and I just really love what that may represent. Every woman is powerful but in their own way. There is no one “correct” way to be a strong woman. It’s amazing how significant details like this are! Furthermore, Peteri's letters pack that final touch this book needed, adding more layers to all the action happening! I mean, did you see that ARGHHHH my eye in the earlier picture? Imagine if that ARGHHHH was "argh" in this exact text used to write this review. Not on Peteri's watch!
The story travels in a fairly predictable fashion throughout this issue, but I don’t mind that- for me, this book is driven by great characterization, dialogue, and art. Phillips continues to deliver the former while acknowledging that this issue was absolutely necessary to move the story forward. I don’t know about others, but I’ve definitely been craving some more action and violence- these are pirates we are talking about! They are trying to escape being held prisoner; if it were a movie, we all would be demanding swords swinging and explosions firing all around!
Well, folks, I am ecstatic to say the entire creative team of A Man Among Ye definitely delivered the start of the spectacle I’d been waiting for - and I can’t wait to see how it continues in the next issue! If A Man Among Ye is not on your pull list by the next FOC cut-off date, let’s just say… I might become A Disappointed Bi Among Ye, and trust me.. Nobody wants to see that :P
