What a wild, entertaining, disturbing yet with a slight comedic flair of a read.
I loved Kyle Starks's writing with Chris Schweizer's art on The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton, so I was glad to read more of Stark's writing here. I had heard good things about this series from people I know, as it was coming out, so I was excited and intrigued to finally read the first in a trade, and it didn't disappoint.
When you read the description it's hard to know what to expect, but you just have to jump in and enjoy the ride. There's lots of mystery, creepiness and some violence, and it's illustrated in this interesting animated yet rough style, which in one way softens the violence and in another actually doesn't. I think what I'm trying to say is that despite everything that happens it's still grounded, both artistically and emotionally, but the art isn't photorealistic, it's animated. It's all illustrated creatively, from the character's expressions to the wildness of everything else, it makes it such a fun read on every page.
There's a fun balance here between the emotional core of the couple here, their relationship, their dynamic, just trying to figure out the ranch, and everything wild and creepy going on. It feels frantic, in a very entertaining way, but it never forgets to make us care about the two main characters, if that makes sense. I said earlier its got a slight comedic flair, and without spoiling anything that's mostly to do with the name, and how that's used at times in the story, and how it nicely grounds it.
Interestingly there were no issue breaks here, I wasn't expecting it but it's always fun when it's done like that. It flowed really nicely throughout the book and just generally it was paced well. There was a nice climatic conclusion, with some interesting teases at the end setting up some more plot threads and mysteries for the next arc, and maybe beyond.
Great, interesting, fun book, I would recommend giving it a try if you want to try something new, relatively unique and out there.
