Monday Minute: Thanos Kills Cap

Let's get into one of the greatest comic book series of all-time, The Infinity Gauntlet. Near the end of issue #4, Jim Starlin gives us a great moment.

Let's set the scene...

Thanos has the Infinity Gauntlet with all the stones. He is out to impress Death with how powerful he is, so he snaps away half of the universe's population. The heroes of the universe (mostly Earth) gather together to battle him. They do not do a good job. He is too strong, and he kills pretty much all of them in horrible ways.

Then comes Captain America. The most noble hero Earth has to offer. After a brief exchange, Silver Surfer and Adam Warlock make an attempt to take the gauntlet from Thanos while he was distracted with Cap. You see, Thanos weakened himself to make it more of a challenge. After this close call, he takes a punch from Captain America which he effortlessly counters with a swift backhand to Cap's head. Captain America dies instantly.

I know, "Cap died! How could you say this is a great moment?! Waaaaahhh!!!" Calm down. He's died plenty of times and he keeps coming back.

Anyway...

This moment is great because it skips the theatrics that often accompany villains battling our favorite heroes. Yes, Thanos is taking it easy for sport, so that is somewhat theatrical. BUT...as soon as he realizes that he allowed himself to be distracted, he quits playing games and kills Cap with ease. Aaaand that's the end of it! He just slaps him in the head, kills him, and then moves on. I love how little time Starlin spent on this. He wasted no words explaining the situation. This seems to be a reflection of how Thanos views Cap: meaningless and small. Take a look. It's awesome!

Told you...

I would strongly encourage you to read the whole series. It's one of my favorites. Don't forget to follow The Wednesday Pull List on social media.
