It's not often that I get to see sapphic stories of time travel grace my world.
Usually, when they do, it's on the TV series Legends of Tomorrow. But, guess what? NOW I GET SAPPHIC STORIES OF TIME TRAVEL IN COMICS!
Anchor: A Lesbian Time Travel Comic is filled with everything a sapphic needs: fun, action, and YEARNING!

Writer Madeline Kelly does the best job with our main character, Phoebe's, narration. Are you a fan of writers like Tom Taylor who build not only characters but worlds off phenomenal narration? Well, Madeline Kelly does this with her own hearty spin to it!
This series, and the way it's written, reminds me of Stephanie Phillips' Artemis and The Assassin. However, whereas that series shone a large historical fiction light on the narrative, Anchor shines a huge romantic light on the narrative.
Make no mistake, though, this isn't another lesbian drama with no hope, but rather a lesbian drama filled with hopeful yearning. It's beautiful, it's sweet, it's rotting my teeth in the best way possible!
Romance and Time Travel: The Perfect Formula

The balance between romance and time travel in Anchor is near perfect. Ever watch The Time Traveller's Wife and thought "this needs to be gay"?? Anchor is The Time Traveller's Wife but less traumatic and way gayer. It's exactly what the doctor ordered!
Less traumatic doesn't mean no plot, though. In this story, Phoebe can't stop "jumping" through time unwillingly. Just when she gets comfortable, she's "jumped" to another time, sometimes another place. Lucky her, Keira is always there, waiting for her at any place, any time. Working to find a way to keep her in one place, one time, forever.
If you just swooned while reading that, you're not alone. I swooned while typing it and you will definitely swoon while you read it! If you rolled your eyes at it: trust me, this isn't your average cliche story. It's magical, heart-wrenching, and heart-warming all at once!
Story AND Art to swoon over!
Not only is the story swoon-worthy, but so is the art! Federica Mancin does a marvelous job blending the genres of sci-fi and romance into one art style. It reminds me of the various art styles used in the current Krakoan-Era X-Men books, such as Pepe Larraz on the main X-Men title. With moments of quiet facial recognition and moments of fast-paced movement, this style couldn't be more suited for Anchor.

Furthermore, Marta Gasperoni's color palette is perfect for this tale. I especially love how she captures shadows illuminating amongst candlelight throughout the issue. It sets the tone for this book and really helps create that yearning atmosphere. Her lettering flows naturally and makes this issue easy to read and understand. Even more, it helped me feel like I was actually a part of this world. It's truly amazing when every creator's role comes together so succinctly!
