The Suicide Squad Spoiler-Free Review

This is The Wednesday Pull List spoiler-free review of The Suicide Squad!

We had the opportunity to go to an early screening of The Suicide Squad! Before I get started, I have to say that I really wanted to enjoy the first attempt at a Suicide Squad movie. I would love to sit here and tell you I did. Sadly, I’m unable to do that. I won’t make the main chunk of this review bashing the first one. We’ve all seen it. I will say though that James Gunn’s THE Suicide Squad took whatever glimmers of hope the first movie had and improved on them. Not only that, this movie had the flow and pacing that the first attempt never seemed to lock down. I use the term “first attempt” because this new film isn’t a sequel even though it does have some familiar faces such as Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Davis’ Amanda Waller, Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, and Cortney’s Captain Boomerang. There are so many new and amazing characters as well. New additions to the cast are Idris Elba, John Cena, Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, David Dasmulchen, Michael Rooker, Jennifer Holland, Sean Gunn, Pete Davidson, Mayling Ng, Peter Capaldi, Flula Borg, Daniella Melchor as well as Sylvester Stallone!

I’ll start by saying I’m a huge fan of both Idris Elba and John Cena. Bloodsport was a bad ass and Peacemaker was hilarious. Their on-screen chemistry is so good! Ratcatcher II and Polka-Dot Man will easily be fan favorites. We didn’t get a ton of Captain Boomerang, but he was still great. Even with such a large cast the film did an amazing job at highlighting everyone. All the way down to the no name characters that didn’t last long. James Gunn did a great job at fleshing out the world.

The film has multiple villains but the big bad, Starro, was just a great choice. Starro first appeared in Brave and the Bold #28 and is the first villain to face the original Justice League of America. I won’t say much about Starro. I was worried about the CGI, but they knocked it out of the park with the villain. On top of that all the action scenes were well done.

I know I’ve done nothing but sing praises for this movie, but I genuinely enjoy it. I will rewatch it when it drops on HBO Max, and we will do a review show over on our Patreon. At this point I would rate this movie a D3. (You’ll have to join the community to understand our grades) Tune in to the Suicide Squad review show to see if my thoughts change!
