WEEKLY COMIC ROUND-UP #12 WITH LAUREN AND JOE!

For new releases 1/12/21!

We are back with your Weekly Round-Up, our top 4 picks of the week! Last week was a DC party, especially with them sweeping ALL of Joe’s picks! Will this week be another DC win? Let's get into it!

Lauren’s Picks

There were SO. SO. many books that were fantastic this week? You know how you have some weeks where your books are “meh” and others where they are all amazing?? For me, this week I had all amazing books! I had to mention some honorable mentions!

HMs: Robin & Batman #3, Wolvenheart #10

For fans of old-school Batman, Robin & Batman might break your heart. It hits on the reality of why Dick Grayson originally left Bruce Wayne to become Nightwing on his own- Bruce Wayne was (and still is honestly) a terrible parent. Lemire and Nguyen craft a beautiful, true, and heartbreaking story.

I just stumbled onto Wolvenheart recently and I LOVE IT! Its supernatural creatures meet time travel. It's beautiful, well-written, fun, and my new favorite world to be in! Check out all my thoughts on the series here.

We all know it’s my favorite every time it comes out, so just a reminder: HARLEY QUINN: EAT BANG KILL TOUR #5 IS OUT IN PRINT! GO GET IT!

Now, for my top 4 picks (other than HQ, cause you know it's my fav already!)

#4: Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #2

BOOM! Studios

Writer: Casey Gilly

Artist: Joe Jaro

Colorist: Joana Lafuente

Letterer: Ed Dukeshire

I gave the first issue a shot on a limb and so far, I’m not regretting it! This is the first Buffy comic I’ve read in YEARS. I didn’t care much for the season 8 stuff but this AU is great. What if Buffy was the last vampire slayer? What if we actually got to see her age and all, along with some of her friends? Casey Gilly perfectly captures the essence of Buffy and each character in this story, while Joe Jaro, Joana Lafuente, Ed Dukeshire bring the whole world together with their lines, colors, and letters! Maybe I’m just a sucker for AUs, but this dystopian future works! If you’re a Buffy fan at all, pick this up!

#3: We Ride Titans #1

Vault Comics

Writer: Tres Dean

Artist: Sebastian Piriz

Colorist: Def Cunniffe

Letterer: Jim Campbell

“By writer Tres Dean, artist Sebastian Piriz, colorist Def Cunniffe, and letterer Jim Campbell, We Ride Titans #1 is a perfect first issue. I don’t know how anything else this year is going to beat it!” To read my full review on this great issue, check it out here!

#2: Dark Ages #4

Marvel Comics

Writer: Tom Taylor

Artist: Iban Coello

Colorist: Brian Reber

Letterist: VC’s Joe Sabino

X-Men stans, we aTE this issue! Wow, between CAPTAIN Kurt Wagner doing the lord’s work, QUEEN STORM coming through, and the best fastball special I’ve seen yet- this issue was a fantastic ride! Before you ask: yes, a death does happen this issue, so be ready! This is my favorite Tom Taylor work that’s printing currently and makes me sad that he’s only DC exclusive for the foreseeable future. Thank god he’s going out on his Marvel stuff with a bang!

#1: Rain #1

SyzygyPublishing, an imprint of Image Comics

Adapted by: David M. Booher

Artist: Zoe Thorogood

Colorist: Chris O’Halloran

Original Story by: Joe Hill

“If you're a fan of heartwrenching stories like The Many Deaths of Laila Starr and horror stories like Something is Killing the Children, this MUST be on your pull list. Booher, Thorogood, and O'Halloran have intensified the magic that is Joe Hill's Rain, and you don't want to be caught in that storm! Run to your LCS, take cover, and grab your copy THIS WEDNESDAY 01/12/22!”

Joe’s Picks

Yes it really was an incredible week for new comics! It seems like every week now I'm having to include some honorable mentions but that can only be a good thing because it shows how awesome comics are these days!

Honorable mentions: Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #1, Detective Comics #1048, Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes #1 and Rain #1!

Now let's get to my top 4 picks of this latest week of new comics!

#4: Stillwater #12

Image Comics

Writer: Chip Zdarsky

Artist: Ramon K. Perez

Colorist: Mike Spicer

Letterer: Rus Wooton

This was an awesome action-packed conclusion to the second arc of the series. I thought the cover was incredible enough but the issue was spectacular! After a slower second arc expanding the mythology of the series and the characters, whilst also pushing the story forward, this issue really brings everything so far to a head.

I won't spoil it because you need to check this out for yourself, but that ending left me fascinated and intrigued to see where this series is going to go next! Very excited to see how it continues to be expanded as we head into the third arc in the Spring. Great story, great art, just great work all round check it out if you haven't already!

#3: Batgirls #2

DC Comics

Writer: Becky Cloonan & Michael Conrad

Artist: Jorge Corona

Colorist: Sarah Stern

Letterer: Becca Carey

I really enjoyed this! I liked the first issue but I thought this was even better. Between this and Robin, Nightwing, Suicide Squad and I'm sure others that aren't coming to mind, I feel like DC is putting out some series that are just plain fun and such a joy to read!

The writing feels fast paced and energetic, but not without some entertaining action and character moments. That's all especially reflected in the art, which I just adore! I loved Jorge Corona's artwork on the incredible The Me You Love in the Dark from last year and Middlewest which I finally read last month, and here with Sarah Stern's coloring it's so gorgeous, energetic and vibrant I love it!

This second issue was a lot of fun, and this series is quickly becoming one of my favorite new series from DC!

#2: What's the Furthest Place From Here? #3

Image Comics

Writer: Matthew Rosenberg

Artist: Tyler Boss

Color Assistant: Shycheeks

Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

I am loving this book. I think I said this in my review for the previous issue, but what I’m liking most about it is how much it reminds me of this one YA book series in particular I loved as an earlier teenager. I know that sounds like a very particular comparison to make but it’s true. The way it’s written where you’re discovering this new world along with the characters, all the eccentricities of it, from the different “families” they’re coming across, to these Strangers we’re finding out more and more about.

Then the art is just perfect. I couldn’t even think how to describe it but I remember seeing someone say it was like “the intersection of David Aja's minimalism with Jorge Fornes's attention to detail” and I can’t put it better than that. Between it’s roughness, the excellent lettering, the whole graphic design of the book from the world to the chapter pages, it feels like exactly what I mean when I think of the word “indie” itself.

This is a great read and is going to make an incredible trade when the first one eventually comes out. Check this series out, you won’t regret it!

#1: Department of Truth #15

Image Comics

Writer: James Tynion IV

Artist & Colorist: David Romero

Letterer: Aditya Bidikar

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This was an incredible issue. That’s not any hyperbole, the craft and ideas and execution of this issue were absolutely phenomenal in a way that was just insane to me. This was another awesome week for new comics, and while there were a few contenders for pick of the week before I read this, once I did I knew I had no other choice. The build-up of tension, atmosphere, blows me away almost every time with this series, but this was something special.

It was genuinely terrifying and at points just downright chilling. Some people will complain this was too much like a novel, but to me it was so much more than that. Using the words, which were impressive enough at setting the scene, but then using the eerie murky artwork to put you further on edge, both elements enriching each other. This was simply incredible and quite easily the stand-out issue of the week for me!

What were your top picks this week? Let us know what we missed! You never know; your recommendation could end up on our lists in the future!
