DC Comics
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist and Colorist: Dustin Nguyen
Letterer: Steve Wands
It’s refreshing to see Bruce written as he often is, but especially was at this current time in canon: a fucking terrible parent. Set when Dick Grayson first became Robin, this story tells us what the early days of Batman and Robin were really like, focusing more on Dick’s perspective. Jeff Lemire is best at telling stories about characters who have been wronged, gone through trauma, or just have it going tough. Robin & Batman is no exception here! It took me a second to realize this wasn’t Lemire’s art; Nguyen’s art style is so similar to Lemire’s. However, Nguyen’s art style has a nice additional touch to it that Lemire’s doesn’t, particularly in the colors. This style gives this series the perfect nostalgic feel as Lemire continues to accelerate the story through a time we all thought we knew well. Overall, a beautiful book and a lovely surprise for me!

Letterist: Steve Wands
Did I mention I’m loving all the Batman stories that look at Bruce through an incredibly critical, yet real and human lens? Let me tell you: this story might be the best Batman story of the year. The story breaks down the Batman/Bruce Wayne psyches in a way I’ve never seen done before and the art is glorious. I will say, sometimes the art is hard to follow, particularly in moments of combat, but the overall aesthetic is so perfect it’s worth the squinting of the eyes. Either way, it forces the reader to slow down and really take in every detail of what they are looking at. I have to say, Steve Wands lettering in this series maybe some of his best work yet! This story is the most critical of Bruce Wayne yet; however, it’s also the most human Bruce Wayne story told yet. This may be the closest Batman/Bruce Wayne has ever felt to Two-Face and I love it! If you missed out, be sure to pick up the hardcover next year!
And the #1 pick of the week is....

If you’re tired of me talking about this one, good, I’m tired of more peeps not reading it! This is one of the best series of the year for me from ANY publisher- and that’s saying something! We’ve had so many great series this year, but few come close to how heartfelt, hilarious, silly, action-packed, and fully entertaining HQ The Eat Bang Kill Tour is! Season 3 is coming soon (hopefully, animators I believe in you!) and I only hope that we get more in-between-seasons comics like this in the future. Pick. this. One. up!
Just when I think I'm back to reading primarily Marvel, DC keeps KILLING it with this Bat-books. I swear, it's getting harder and harder to say "give me less Batman stories" when they keep making good ones...
What were your top picks this week? Let me know what I missed! You never know; your recommendation could end up on my or Joe's lists in the future!
Check back in for Joe's picks in the coming weeks! :)
