WEEKLY ROUND-UP #17 WITH LAUREN!

For new releases 2/16/22!

Joe is not at university this week, so he wasn't able to get his comics. I know, a true travesty! BUT he will be BACK next week! So guess what? It’s Your Friendly NBHD Bi’s top 4 picks this week! I’ll be honest, I haven’t gotten to everything this week. Can you believe work gets in the way of things? So rude. Butttt…. Here are my top 4 that I did get to read so far!

#4: A Man Among Ye #8

Image Comics

Writer: Stephanie Phillips

Artist: Josh George

Colorist: John Kalisz

Letterer: Troy Peteri with ALW Studios

I truly hope this isn't the last we see of this series! A Man Among Ye has been SUCH a fantastic pirate tale. It’s funny, it’s intense, it’s action-packed, it’s charming, it’s women-led and focused, it’s WRITTEN by a woman, it’s everything I want in a pirate story! I won’t lie, I feel slightly conflicted about the big reveal in this issue and why it went this route, but at the end of the day, even if I don’t like it, it does make logical sense. And that means it’s good writing, and that’s all I want. Even if I don’t agree with where a story goes, I can respect it when it’s clear the writer still knows what they are doing, they just choose a different path than I. Stephanie Phillips is such a phenomenal writer and if she felt this is where it needed to go, I trust her. And Josh George’s art? Well, it’s the cherry on top of a quality story. A great series and I hope Image brings it back!

#3: Rain #2

Image Comics

Writer: David M. Booher

Artist: Zoe Thorogood

Colorist: Chris O'Halloran

Letterer: Shawn Lee

Original Story by: Joe Hill

I absolutely adore how the story progresses this issue. The first issue makes RAIN seem like it's primarily a love story between Honeysuckle and Yolanda, but that's not it. This story is far bigger than that and Booher does a wonderful job bringing it to comic book form. Thorogood's art and O'Halloran's pastel colors continue to steal my breath away. This series lures you in with hope and engulfs you in the bitter, but very real reality of an apocalypse and pain. No matter how intense it feels on each page and panel, I can't stop myself from reading more. Now I slightly wish I could because that ending?? Oh my. More heartache is coming and I know it's gonna hurt, but I HAVE to see it. RAIN is a beauty we need!

#2: Nubia and The Amazons #5

DC Comics

Writer: Stephanie Phillips and Vita Ayala

Penciller: Alitha Martinez

Inker: Mark Morales

Colorist: Romulo Fajardo Jr.

Man, this creative team just GETS Nubia AND The Amazons. Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala continue to bring Amazonian lore, amazing character development, and a plot that’s NEEDED attending to, all together in a glorious way! And the art?? Oh my god. It FEELS like I’m on Themyscira. There’s only one more issue left and all I can say is- will we get more Nubia after Trial of The Amazons? Does DC KNOW they got it good? I SURE HOPE SO!

Side note: It does trouble me no one was credited for lettering in the book. Hmm...

#1: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #8

DC Comics

Writer: Tom King

Artist: Bilquis Evely

Colorist: Mat Lopes

Letterer: Clayton Cowles

I’m as shocked as the next Supergirl fan, but this series was magnificent- and this ending was perfect. This is the first truly GREAT Supergirl story. Not good, not in between, GREAT. ASTOUNDING. This is the first time I’ve ever read a Supergirl story and felt someone understood how GREAT Supergirl is, outside of her being the only woman super people put any attention on (and even then, it doesn't feel like much sometimes). It’s nice to have a story that really shows HER strengths and HER belief in hope without someone else overshadowing her, especially Clark Kent. Love the guy but he’s had so many great stories. Finally, FINALLY someone recognizes Kara Zor-El for who she is: one of the greatest heroes of all time. One of the UNIVERSE’S greatest heroes of all time. I can’t say enough good things about this story. Give her back her ongoing, cowards! (@ DC)
