For new releases 5-4-22!
We are back with your Weekly Round-Up, our top 4 picks of the week! Let's get into it!
Lauren’s Picks

Marvel Comics
Writer: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Ario Anindito
Colorist: Carlos Lopez
Letterer: VC’s Joe Caramagna
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book other than it’s clearly timed with the upcoming Obi-Wan Disney+ series. I can say, I was nicely surprised that it’s basically a coming of age story for Obi-Wan, where we get to see how he grew up; what his motivations and passions in life were for the start. Cantwell does a great job capturing Obi-Wan’s inner voice and monologue and Anindito’s art style is consistent with other Star Wars books, such as The High Republic and Darth Vader. It really makes all these comics flow together in one world well. A fun and enjoyable read!

DC Comics
Writer: Brandon Thomas
Penciller: Denys Cowan
Inker: Bill Sienkiewicz
Colorist: Chris Sotomayor
Letterer: Rob Leigh
This series has been up and down for me, in all honesty. The first two issues were bangers, 3 and 4 I felt kind of… off about? But this issue came back with a VENGEANCE, just like Hardware himself! This is my favorite of the DC Milestone books and a book that we all need to read! The art style is perfect for the modernized 90’s vibes they want and, goodness, the story is all too relevant to today. Who wants a perfect superhero when we can have one that’s as flawed and real as ourselves?
#2: Nubia: Coronation Special

DC Comics
Writer: Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala
Artist: Marguerite Sauvage, Colleen Doran, Darryl Banks, Jill Thompson, and Alitha Martinez
Colorist: Marguerita Sauvage, Coleen Doran, Hi-Fi, Jill Thompson, and Alex Guimares
Letterer: Becca Carey
Listen, anything and all things Nubia written by Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala will be bought by ME without hesitation. I love how they have re-written Nubia’s origin and her as a character. Furthermore, having ALL the Amazons be united under one phenomenal queen? We LOVE unity!! The varying art styles in this book are also fantastic and actually add to the story, helping separate past time with current time. If you aren’t keeping up with all things Amazonian, you’re foolish, but if you aren’t keeping up with all things NUBIA, well, what the fuck are you doing?!? CATCH UP!!

DC Comics
Writer: Daniel Park and Lauren Fields
Penciller: Paul Pelletier
Inker: Andrew Hennessy
Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
When this book was first solicited, many of the fans of the show Legends Of Tomorrow were disappointed, including me. It was originally solicited as a story with only past Legends and not the current ones, which, to an extent is true. However, it’s not the entire truth- while the main story focuses on mostly the past Legends, we DO see the current Legends, including Sara Lance herself! I gotta say, this book was anything BUT a letdown- it was fun, chaotic, wholesome, silly, ridiculous, and a giant hug that we all needed after the cancellation of the TV show. Maybe this one felt even better to read because of that, but even before the cancellation, this was my book of the week, ever since I read my review copy. This book is further evidence that the show shouldn’t have ended AND that even if it ended on it’s own terms, this team could carry over to the comics seamlessly. Legends Never Go Quietly, and this book definitely didn’t- in the best way possible. A No-Brainer for my top pick!

Image Comics
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Dustin Nguyen
Letterer: Steve Wands
I'll admit I can't disagree when people complain that this series has been relatively slow so far, and would read better with a bunch of issues in a trade paperback, but honestly to me I'm so intrigued by everything here I don't mind that too much.
The story is proving to be very interesting, it's been great to see the characters start to stand out from each other over these past first few issues, and I'm excited to see where it goes.
Stripped of the painted watercolors, Nguyen's artwork feels very refined, all the lines look hard and defined whilst the lack of colors gives it this dreamy feel which just adds to the overall intrigue of the book for me.
So yeah, not a whole lot has happened, but it's been intriguing enough that I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Image Comics
Writer: Kyle Higgins
Artist: Marcelo Costa
Colorist: Igor Monti
Letterer: Becca Carey
This was a great issue. A bit less epic and action focused than the solicit implied, but I hadn't realised that until afterwards so I didn't really mind that.
I've said this before in previous reviews of this series, but one of my favourite parts of it isn't necessarily the big, epic superhero action (although there's plenty of that and I love it) but it's the characters, their dynamics and how they've been presented and developed over the series. Especially given the current situation we're in with Nathan and Marshall.
As well as those great character moments, there were also some fun and interesting plot developments with our villains the series is focusing on at the moment, and the art was absolutely gorgeous! So dynamic and exciting, not only in the action scenes but also the conversational scenes, which is always an important balance I appreciate in the comics I read. The coloring by Monti was so vibrant and really gave it an epic feel, I just loved it.
Overall a great well done issue that I enjoyed!

Image Comics
Writer: Skottie Young
Art: Kyle Strahm
Colorist: Jean-Francois Beaulieu
Letterer: Nate Piekos
I know it's explicitly mentioned in the solicit, but from all I hear about Bone if you're a fan of that then you definitely need to check out this, it was just a lot of fun!
I'll be honest I'm an absolute sucker for these kind of stories, and it's why I know I'll really enjoy Bone when I eventually get round to it. From this first issue I could already tell what a rich and expansive fantasy world this is. While I haven't read Bone yet, the closest thing I've ever read to this is probably Wynd (also a great read) and I just love that feel of exploring this new world we're introduced to.
I fell in love with Beaulieu's coloring when The Me You Love in the Dark first came out, and it was part of why I adored Middlewest so much, so it was an absolute treat to see it again here. Step By Bloody Step (another fantastic comic going on at the moment) has been a joy for just soaking in scenic landscapes, and it's a similar thing here. So bright and all round so vibrant and colorful, the coloring just in general radiates in a way that I can't help but smile when I'm appreciating it.
Also the design of Twig is great of course but I particularly love the look of Splat. I'm always all for an adorable sidekick, I love his orange look and it's just generally a satisfying design to look at for me haha.
Some nice setup here, but I'm more excited to get in the story properly next issue, and see where it's going to go! Especially from that last page, this is going to be a fun ride for sure, check it out if you haven't already!

Fantastic.
This has been an awesome series so far, and if any comic rightfully deserved the top spot this week it was this issue without question. There were some great books to choose from, especially with Image, as you've seen from this list, but this was easily the one that blew me away and secured that pick of the week spot.
I mentioned Step By Bloody Step in the Twig review this week, and it's so fun to have two books with minimal to no dialogue out at the same time, and both doing it incredibly well. The action sequences in this book are just nailed. The visual storytelling is so well done and is what makes this such a compelling, gripping, and all around enjoyable read. It's so dynamic, I can really feel the action as I'm reading it through.
To me it's easily one of the best books on shelves at the moment, so definitely check it out if you haven't already!
